Tesla has pulled back the covers on a new Roadster and demonstrated acceleration that, if it reaches showrooms as claimed, would reset expectations for electric performance cars. The company is quoting a 0.8-second sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h, part of a package that also includes technology Tesla presents as giving the car a flying capability. That combination of numbers and theatrics is what has dominated reaction to the reveal.
The important caveat for buyers is timing. Tesla says the Roadster will go into production in 2028, which is several years away and a promise the company has made and revised before. Anyone tempted to plan around it should treat the date as an intention rather than a delivery schedule, and expect specifications to shift between now and any customer car.
As a halo model, the Roadster sits above everything Tesla currently sells, including the Model S Plaid, and would compete in the small circle of electric hypercars and high-end performance cars available in Saudi Arabia. Rivals in that space include the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, the Audi RS e-tron GT, the Lucid Air Sapphire and, at the extreme end, limited-run electric hypercars. Conventional supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren remain the alternative for buyers who prefer combustion.
Saudi shoppers should watch a few practical points. Road registration
