Chery has confirmed that the platform underpinning its new Stockman pickup was engineered from the outset to accommodate an SUV body as well, keeping alive the prospect of a three-row, ladder-frame family SUV from the Chinese brand. According to the brief, the architecture could support a diesel plug-in hybrid setup, which would make such a model an unusual proposition in a segment still dominated by conventional combustion engines.
That matters in Saudi Arabia, where body-on-frame three-row SUVs remain a favourite for families who want space for seven, decent ground clearance and the confidence to leave the tarmac on weekend trips. The class is firmly established here, with the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, Nissan X-Terra, Mitsubishi Montero Sport and Isuzu MU-X all familiar sights on local roads. A Chery entrant would be competing against names with decades of local loyalty.
Mechanically, a pickup-derived SUV typically brings a separate chassis, a low-range transmission option and generous towing capacity — traits buyers in this part of the world appreciate. Adding diesel plug-in hybrid technology could appeal to drivers covering long intercity distances who still want lower fuel consumption around town, though the brand has not outlined how such a system would be configured.
Positioning is the interesting question. Chery already fields car-based crossovers through its main range and upmarket SUVs under Exeed, while Jetour covers the value-focused family space. A rugged ladder-frame model would sit apart from all of them, aimed squarely at the traditional off-road-capable family SUV buyer rather than the urban crossover shopper.
For now, Saudi shoppers should treat this as a possibility rather than a product announcement. There is no confirmed production version, launch timing, engine output or pricing to report. Buyers interested in the eventual model should watch how Chery's dealer and service network expands, what warranty cover is offered locally, and how resale values for newer Chinese nameplates settle over time — all of which matter as much as the hardware itself.
