Kia has confirmed that the upcoming 2028 K5 will not be a full redesign, but rather a substantial update of the current generation. By choosing this path, the Korean automaker is effectively following the playbook that Toyota perfected with the Camry: keep the nameplate stable, refine the details, and inject fresh technology to extend its life.
The most notable changes for the 2028 model are inside the cabin and under the bonnet. The K5 will feature Pleos Connect, an AI-integrated infotainment system, alongside a new 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain option. However, all of this rides on the same underlying platform that has been in service since 2019. This means Kia is focusing on software and electrification upgrades rather than reengineering the chassis.
For Saudi buyers, the K5 sits firmly in the competitive mid-size sedan segment, where it has always been a stylish alternative to established Japanese names. Its most direct rivals in the Kingdom remain the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, both of which have built reputations for reliability and resale value. The Nissan Altima also competes in this space, along with the Korean sibling, the Hyundai Sonata. By refreshing the K5 instead of replacing it, Kia is signalling that the sedan is still important in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs.
What should shoppers watch for? First, the hybrid system is the headline addition, especially as fuel prices and efficiency become bigger factors for buyers in Saudi Arabia. Second, the new AI-driven interface could be a differentiator — but it remains to be seen how well it works in local conditions and languages. Finally, because the platform predates the update by nearly a decade, prospective owners should test the ride and refinement against fresher rivals to decide whether the new technology is enough to compensate for an older foundation.
