General Motors is pushing deeper into American-made batteries, working to build out US supply chains for both electric-vehicle packs and stationary energy storage. The move lands in the middle of a heated political argument over where automakers source their components, after President Trump publicly criticised rival Ford — a signal that battery sourcing has become as much a Washington story as a Detroit one.
For GM, the logic is straightforward: batteries are the single most expensive part of an electric vehicle, and controlling where the cells and their raw materials come from gives the company more say over cost, quality and delivery timing. Anchoring that work inside the United States also shields GM from tariff swings and shipping disruptions that can ripple through global supply chains.
