BMW has unveiled the next generation of its X5, and the headline news for buyers is that the midsize luxury SUV gains bolder exterior and cabin design, a more powerful engine lineup, and a price that rises only modestly over the outgoing model. That combination matters in a segment where German rivals have been adding cost as quickly as they add equipment.
The X5 has long been the benchmark in the premium midsize SUV class, and in Saudi Arabia it competes directly with the Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Audi Q7, the Volvo XC90 and, increasingly, the Genesis GV80. Buyers cross-shopping from the Japanese side often look at the Lexus GX or RX, while Porsche's Cayenne sits above it in price. It is a crowded field, which is why BMW has kept the price increase small rather than repositioning the X5 upmarket.
Visually, the new model is a clear departure from the version it replaces, with sharper surfacing and a cabin that BMW says has been redesigned around a cleaner dashboard layout and upgraded materials. Power output is up across the range, though BMW has not yet confirmed how the lineup will be split between conventional and electrified variants for our market.
Saudi shoppers should watch which trims actually reach showrooms here, since the base specification can differ noticeably from what is advertised globally. Pay attention to whether all-wheel drive is standard across the range, how much of the driver-assistance and comfort equipment is bundled versus optional, and whether a plug-in hybrid version is offered locally, given the country's growing charging network.
It is also worth asking dealers about warranty terms, service intervals and expected waiting times, and checking how the previous X5 has held its value in the used market. For a vehicle intended to cope with Saudi summers, cooling performance and air-conditioning effectiveness deserve a test drive in real conditions rather than a showroom demo.
