Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng has confirmed it is working on its first pickup truck, widely seen as a direct competitor to Tesla’s angular Cybertruck. The move is part of the brand’s aggressive global expansion, with the company specifically noting that utes play a critical role in markets like Australia. While Saudi Arabia was not mentioned in the announcement, the kingdom’s growing appetite for electric pickups makes it a natural future target.
Xpeng’s upcoming ute would enter a segment already dominated by established names such as the Ford F-150 and Toyota Hilux, both hugely popular in Saudi Arabia. On the electric side, the Tesla Cybertruck has generated considerable hype locally despite not yet being officially sold through Saudi channels. Rivian’s R1T is also a potential competitor, though its presence remains limited. Xpeng will need to differentiate itself through distinctive design and advanced technology, as it has done with its saloons and SUVs.
Saudi buyers considering this future model should keep a close eye on two factors. First, availability: Xpeng has been rolling out its lineup in Europe and the Middle East gradually, so a local launch may not happen immediately. Second, practicality: Saudi’s harsh climate and long-distance driving demands robust battery range and reliable cooling systems. Xpeng’s track record with its G9 SUV suggests it understands these requirements, but a pickup is a different proposition.
If Xpeng follows the Cybertruck’s polarising aesthetic, it could attract attention in a region that values bold automotive statements. The brand’s strong focus on smart cockpit features and autonomous driving capabilities may also appeal to tech-forward buyers. For now, the pickup remains in the planning stage, but it signals Xpeng’s intent to challenge established players in one of the world’s most important truck markets.
