BYD used the Paris motor show to pull the covers off an electric version of its Sealion 8, positioning the large family SUV as its new flagship model for Europe. The company is quoting a range of 650 kilometres for the vehicle, and says the electric Sealion 8 will reach European showrooms as part of a launch planned for 2027.
The move matters because the Sealion 8 sits at the top of BYD's SUV range, above the models that have already made the brand a familiar sight on Saudi roads. A three-row electric family SUV puts BYD in direct competition with the likes of the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, along with premium alternatives such as the Tesla Model X, and it also overlaps with electric seven-seaters from Chinese rivals that are steadily entering the Kingdom.
For Saudi buyers, the headline range figure deserves some context. Range claims are measured on official test cycles that rarely match real-world driving, and a large, heavy SUV running air conditioning through a Saudi summer, at highway speeds, will use considerably more energy than the laboratory number suggests. The figure is best treated as a comparison tool between rivals rather than a promise of how far the car will travel on the Riyadh-to-Dammam run.
Shoppers should also watch for details BYD has not yet confirmed, including charging speed, battery cooling designed for hot climates, and whether the electric Sealion 8 will be offered in the Gulf at all or remain a Europe-only model. Availability, warranty terms and the strength of the local service network will matter as much as the range claim.
Anyone considering a large electric family SUV in Saudi Arabia should weigh usable third-row space, charging options at home and on the road, and resale performance, which remains unsettled for electric models in the region. The Paris debut signals intent, but the practical answers will arrive closer to launch.
