Bentley design boss on copycats: "We're a pinnacle brand, so a lot of brands look to us

Bentley's design chief says other brands take "heavy inspiration" from the British marque and that advancing its design DNA is his biggest challenge.

Bentley's head of design has acknowledged that rival automakers draw what he described as heavy inspiration from the British luxury marque, arguing that the brand's status at the top of the market makes imitation almost inevitable. He framed the real difficulty not as fending off copycats, but as pushing Bentley's own design language forward without losing the cues that made it recognisable in the first place.

That tension matters in Saudi Arabia, where Bentley competes at the very top of the market. The Continental GT coupe, the Flying Spur sedan and the Bentayga SUV are the models most commonly seen in Riyadh and Jeddah showrooms, sitting above mainstream premium brands and alongside a small group of ultra-luxury rivals such as Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Maybach. Bentley has also been moving toward electrification, which adds another layer of design pressure.

For buyers in the Kingdom, the design debate has a practical edge. When styling cues from a flagship brand filter down into cheaper vehicles, the visual gap that partly justifies the price closes, and that can affect how a car is perceived at resale. Saudi shoppers weighing a Bentley against a rival should look beyond the badge and consider how well the design has aged on earlier generations.

Customisation is another factor. Bentley's personalisation programmes allow extensive colour, trim and detailing choices, and in this segment those decisions often influence desirability more than any single specification figure. A restrained, classic build tends to hold appeal longer than a highly trend-driven one.

Anyone shopping in this tier should also confirm the vehicle is supplied through the official Saudi dealer network, so that warranty coverage, servicing and software updates are handled locally rather than through a parallel import. With design leadership now framed as the brand's central challenge, expect future Bentley models to evolve carefully rather than dramatically.
