A new survey out of Canada suggests that many electric-vehicle shoppers there are deliberately postponing their purchases, not because they doubt EVs, but because they expect more Chinese models to arrive soon. The finding points to something bigger than a single market: buyers appear increasingly aware of how competitive Chinese electric cars have become, and some are choosing to sit out the current cycle rather than commit to a Western-brand EV today.
That reluctance is easy to understand. Chinese manufacturers have moved quickly on battery technology, in-car software and equipment lists, and they refresh their lineups far more often than many legacy brands. For shoppers, the appeal is not only the product itself but the sense that the next arrival will offer more for the money than what is sitting on showroom floors right now.
For Saudi buyers, the dynamic is already familiar. Chinese brands such as BYD, MG, Changan, Geely and others have a visible presence in the Kingdom, and new nameplates keep appearing alongside established players like Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and the European premium marques. The result is a crowded, fast-moving segment where waiting a few months can genuinely change what your budget buys.
Still, patience carries its own risks. Prices, financing offers and government-backed charging incentives can shift, and new models may launch with limited allocations or long delivery windows. Buyers who delay too long may find the deal they were waiting for arrives with a higher price tag or a longer queue.
Before committing to either camp, Saudi shoppers should look beyond the badge. Check warranty terms, the number of authorized service centres, parts availability and expected resale value. Confirm the vehicle supports the charging standards available locally and that software updates will be supported long term.
The lesson from the Canadian survey is simple: brand loyalty is weakening, and buyers are willing to wait for what they consider better value. Dealers and automakers in the Kingdom should expect the same scrutiny.
