Used-car inspection checklist

Inspecting a used car before you buy? Work through this checklist point by point. Your ticks are saved on this device, and you can print the list to take it to the seller. When in doubt, always get an independent certified inspection (Fahes).

Documents & history

• VIN matches the registration (istimara) and chassis plate
• Documented service / maintenance history
• No outstanding finance or lien on the car
• Check the accident & odometer history report (Mojaz)
• Registration valid and no unpaid traffic fines
• Seller is ready to transfer ownership immediately

Body & paint

• Even paint colour and texture, no overspray (sign of a repaint)
• Consistent panel gaps all around
• No rust under the doors or wheel arches
• Windshield and glass free of cracks or chips
• All lights work, no internal condensation
• Doors, hood and trunk open and close smoothly

Tyres & wheels

• Adequate, even tread depth (all four + spare)
• Matching tyre size/brand and even wear
• Tyre manufacture date recent (not older than 5–6 years)
• No sidewall cracks or bulges
• Rims free of cracks or buckling

Engine bay

• Engine oil level and colour healthy (not milky or burnt)
• Coolant level and colour
• Belts and hoses free of cracks
• No leaks under the engine
• Battery terminals clean and secure
• Smooth cold start with no smoke

Interior & electronics

• A/C cools quickly and strongly (critical in Saudi heat)
• Power windows, mirrors and locks all work
• Screen, cameras and infotainment work
• Warning lights clear after startup
• Seats and upholstery in good condition
• Odometer reading consistent with overall wear

Test drive

• Steady idle with no vibration
• Acceleration responds without hesitation
• Transmission shifts smoothly
• Brakes stop straight with no vibration or noise
• Steering centred, no pulling or shaking
• No suspension noises over bumps

Before you buy

• Get an independent certified inspection (Fahes) before paying
• Negotiate the price based on what you found
• Test every key and remote
• Confirm the spare tyre, jack and tools are present
