Volkswagen engineers considered equipping the ID. Buzz with a petrol backup engine to ease range anxiety, but the project was ultimately shelved due to lack of space in the vehicle's platform. The idea emerged as a way to give the electric minivan more flexibility on long trips, particularly in markets with sparse charging networks. However, the dedicated EV architecture simply could not accommodate both a battery pack and an internal combustion unit without compromising interior room or cargo capacity.

The ID. Buzz occupies a unique niche in the Saudi market as a retro-styled, battery-powered people carrier. It competes less directly with traditional minivans like the Toyota Alphard or Lexus LM, and more with emerging electric multi-purpose vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV9, though those are SUVs rather than vans. Buyers seeking a spacious family hauler with zero emissions will find the ID. Buzz distinctive, but they must accept current electric-vehicle limitations.

For Saudi shoppers, the key consideration is real-world range in hot conditions. The ID. Buzz is available with battery options that offer official WLTP ranges, but high ambient temperatures can reduce that figure significantly. Volkswagen has stated that a new multi-powertrain architecture will underpin future generations of its commercial vehicles, meaning later models could offer both pure electric and hybrid options. That change would address range concerns directly, but it will not arrive for several years.

Potential buyers should also evaluate charging infrastructure. While Saudi Arabia is expanding its fast-charger network, coverage remains sparse outside major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah. The ID. Buzz’s charging speed is competitive for its class, but planning long cross-desert journeys will require careful route planning. Until the next-generation platform arrives with more versatile powertrain choices, the current ID. Buzz remains a stylish urban and suburban hauler rather than a go-anywhere family van.
