The Lincoln Aviator PHEV May Have Died In America, But It’s Coming Back In China

China's MIIT has exposed the Lincoln Aviator EX8, a Changan-made PHEV made just for China.

Lincoln's plug-in hybrid Aviator, which disappeared from the American lineup, is set to reappear on the other side of the world. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has published details of a new model called the Lincoln Aviator EX8, a plug-in hybrid built by Changan and intended exclusively for the Chinese market. In effect, the electrified Aviator has been retired in the United States and revived in China.

The arrangement reflects where Lincoln's priorities now lie. China is the world's largest market for plug-in hybrids, and the brand's local joint-venture operation with Changan gives it the industrial base to build electrified versions of its larger SUVs without disturbing North American production plans. American shoppers, by contrast, lose the option entirely.

For Saudi buyers, the Aviator is a familiar nameplate in the premium three-row SUV class, sitting above the Nautilus and below the Navigator in Lincoln's range. Its natural rivals in the Kingdom include the Volvo XC90, the Infiniti QX60, the Genesis GV80 and the German trio of the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7. Several of those competitors already offer plug-in hybrid variants, which makes the Aviator's electrified retreat from the US notable.

A plug-in hybrid can make sense for Saudi households that cover short daily distances and can charge at home, since the electric range handles routine errands while the petrol engine takes over on longer desert or highway runs. Buyers should remember, though, that fuel savings depend heavily on charging habits, and that PHEV versions typically command a premium over equivalent combustion models.

Nothing suggests the Aviator EX8 will reach Gulf showrooms. The model is described as China-specific, and Lincoln has not indicated plans to offer an electrified Aviator in Saudi Arabia. Shoppers
