Mini has introduced a new special edition that leans heavily on its past. Called the 1998 GT Edition, the car is a tribute to the classic Mini 1275 GT that first appeared in 1969, a model remembered for its sporting character. This time, however, the tribute is built on the entry-level Cooper C rather than a performance-focused variant, and it dresses that car up with orange decals and a selection of John Cooper Works parts.
The twist is where it lands in the range. The 1998 GT Edition is positioned above the Cooper S on price while offering less power, which means buyers are paying a premium for appearance and nostalgia rather than speed. In effect, the special edition asks customers to value styling and exclusivity over outright performance.
That places it in an unusual spot in the small premium hatchback segment. In Saudi showrooms, shoppers cross-shopping this Mini will likely also look at the Audi A1, the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Fiat 500 and, closer to home, the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
