Jaguar Land Rover Plans US Defender Pickup Built With Stellantis, Sources Say

Jaguar Land Rover is reportedly studying a pickup version of the Defender to be built in the United States, with Stellantis named as a potential partner in the project. According to sources, the two automakers are weighing the idea together, a move that would put a boxy, off-road-focused truck into one of the world's most profitable vehicle categories. Neither company has confirmed a production commitment.

The American angle is central. Building the vehicle in the US would help the brand side-step tariffs that apply to imported light trucks, a cost barrier that has historically kept European and Japanese manufacturers out of that market. For JLR, which already has a growing North American presence, local assembly could make the business case work where an imported Defender pickup would struggle.

Details remain unsettled, according to the sources. The platform the truck would ride on and the timing of any launch are both still open questions, and it is not clear whether the vehicle would share its underpinnings with the existing Defender or use a separate architecture from the Stellantis side of the partnership. Until those decisions are made, the project stays in the exploration stage.

For Saudi buyers, the significance lies in what a Defender pickup would compete against. The Defender nameplate already sits in the premium end of the off-road segment here, alongside the Mercedes G-Class, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Nissan Patrol and the Jeep Wrangler, while the pickup body style would push it toward the Ford Bronco and Jeep Gladiator territory. A double-cab version would also brush against the workhorse pickups that dominate Saudi roads.

Shoppers should watch a few things. First, whether the model would be offered in the Kingdom at all, since US-built trucks often stay close to home. Second, whether it is engineered as a genuine load-carrying workhorse or a lifestyle truck with limited bed capacity. And third, how parts availability and resale value would compare with the established names already circulating in the local market.
