Hyundai Launching Its Own Self-Driving Suite In 2029…Sort Of

Hyundai has confirmed plans to roll out a Level 2+ driver-assistance system in 2028, with a broader self-driving suite positioned for around 2029. The "sort of" in the headline is the important part: this is not a car that drives itself. Level 2+ systems can handle steering, braking and acceleration in defined situations, but the driver stays responsible at all times and must remain ready to take over.

The second half of Hyundai's plan is arguably more interesting than the hardware. The company intends to gather driving data from its vehicles and use it to train the software behind its autonomous technology. That is broadly how most automakers are approaching the problem — Tesla, General Motors and several Chinese brands all lean on real-world fleet data — because simulation alone struggles to capture messy traffic, unusual road layouts and unpredictable pedestrians.
