Ferrari has announced the 296 GT Modificata, a new car aimed exclusively at the track with power reaching 720 horsepower. The name alone points to the essence of the project, as it is a modified and evolved version that starts from the expertise the Italian brand has accumulated with the 296 GT3 Evo, but it does not adhere to the technical restrictions imposed by official championship regulations.
This is where the core idea lies: when the car is not forced to comply with Balance of Performance rules or the lists of restrictions approved in racing, engineers have a wider margin to work on performance, aerodynamics, weight and response. That is, Ferrari is offering its customers a car built in the spirit of racing, but without regulatory restrictions that hold back its potential.
This car falls into a very narrow and highly specialized category, in which it does not compete with sports cars that can be driven on public roads, but rather with track-only models such as its counterparts from Porsche, Lamborghini and McLaren that are used on track days and in championships.
