China's Chery Considers Partnering With A US Automaker, Does Detroit Have Another Option?

Chery is considering partnering with a U.S. automaker

Chery is weighing a possible partnership with an American automaker as it looks for a way into the United States market, according to reports. The Chinese group, which already sells a broad line-up of crossovers and sedans across the Middle East, would be following several of its domestic rivals in exploring cooperation rather than straightforward exports.

The logic is easy to see. Chinese-built vehicles face steep production tariffs at the US border, and restrictions on connected-car software and hardware have made it harder still for those brands to sell there directly. Teaming up with an established American manufacturer could give Chery what tariffs alone deny it: local assembly, an existing dealer network and familiarity with US safety and emissions rules. Whether such a tie-up materialises is far from settled, and no partner has been identified publicly.

For Saudi shoppers, the story matters more than it might first appear. Chery has built a strong presence in the Kingdom over the past few years, with the Tiggo family of crossovers and the newer Omoda and Jaecoo lines competing in the value-focused end of the market. A US alliance could eventually influence product planning, engineering resources and how the brand is perceived globally — though any effect on Gulf specifications would likely take time to show.

In Saudi showrooms, the Tiggo models go up against well-established names such as the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Nissan X-Trail, as well as fellow Chinese challengers including MG, Haval and Geely. Chery's pitch has generally rested on equipment levels and pricing rather than brand prestige, and that positioning is unlikely to shift overnight.

Buyers watching this space should keep a few things in mind: whether talks turn into a confirmed deal, which American company is involved, and whether any change touches the models, warranties or parts supply offered locally. Until then, treat the news as a signal of Chery's global ambitions rather than a reason to
