BYD’s new ultra-luxe EV has coach doors and may be its first with solid-state batteries

BYD has unveiled a new flagship electric sedan that the company is positioning as one of its most luxurious and technologically advanced models yet, and it arrives with two details that have raised eyebrows: Rolls-Royce-style coach doors and the possibility of solid-state batteries. BYD has also highlighted a fast-charging capability it calls Flash Charging, which it says can add range in around five minutes.

The coach doors are the most visible statement. Rear-hinged doors that open without a central pillar are a hallmark of ultra-luxury sedans, and they signal that BYD is no longer competing only on value. The brand has spent years building its reputation in Saudi Arabia around practical, well-equipped electric crossovers and sedans, so a model like this is aimed at changing how buyers perceive the badge at the top of the market.

That puts it in territory occupied in Saudi showrooms by the Mercedes-Benz EQS and BMW i7, along with electric flagships from Porsche, Lucid and Tesla. It would also sit near the very top of BYD's own range, above the models Saudi customers already know. The solid-state battery angle matters because that technology is widely viewed as the next step for EVs, promising lighter packs and longer range, but it remains unproven in mass production.

For Saudi shoppers, the practical questions are the ones that will decide whether this car works here. Will it be offered officially through local dealers, and with what warranty and service coverage? How does a low-slung sedan with elaborate doors cope with summer heat, and how much range does it actually deliver at highway speeds in high temperatures?

Charging is another consideration. A five-minute charge claim is only meaningful if a compatible high-power charger is available where you drive, and Saudi Arabia's fast-charging network is still expanding. Buyers should also ask about parts availability, resale value and whether the battery technology is confirmed or still speculative.

Treat the solid-state talk as a promise rather than a certainty until BYD confirms specifications for production cars bound for this market.
