2027 Volvo XC60 and XC90 gain new long-range PHEV

Volvo has refreshed two of its most important SUVs for the 2027 model year, giving both the XC60 and the larger XC90 a new plug-in hybrid system built around a substantially bigger battery. The pack is described as EV-sized and sits beneath the cabin floor, which is a meaningful departure from the small batteries that most plug-in hybrids carry today. The XC60 also picks up exterior styling that now follows the same design language as the smaller XC40.

That matters because plug-in hybrids have long been criticised for offering only a token amount of electric driving before the petrol engine takes over. A battery closer in capacity to what a fully electric car uses should let owners cover far more of their daily driving on electricity alone, which is exactly the kind of use case a PHEV is meant to serve. Volvo has not yet detailed range figures or pricing for the region.

In Saudi showrooms, the XC60 competes in the mid-size premium SUV class against the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Lexus NX and Genesis GV70. The XC90 plays in the larger three-row luxury bracket, where it faces the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Genesis GV80 and Lexus TX. Both Volvos have traditionally appealed to buyers who want something less common than the German defaults.
