About King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals

King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) is a non-profit research university in Dhahran, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. It opened by royal decree on 23 September 1963 as the College of Petroleum & Minerals, created in response to the growth of the Saudi energy industry; it gained university status in 1975 and took King Fahd's name in 1986. Its programmes concentrate on science, engineering, technology and business. KFUPM ranks 4th worldwide in petroleum engineering and 15th in mining engineering in the QS subject rankings, and in 2025 placed second globally for US utility patents granted, according to the National Academy of Inventors.
