Self-Driving Tech Was Supposed To Be Safer, Experts Say It May Bring More Risks

Could self-driving tech actually bring with it more risks?

Safety experts are now warning that self-driving technology, long marketed as a way to cut crashes, may end up adding new risks of its own. The concern is not that automated systems always fail, but that drivers may hand over more trust than the technology deserves — and that the gap between what a car can do and what a driver believes it can do is where danger lives.

That gap matters because most systems available in showrooms today are partial automation, not true self-driving. They can hold a lane, follow traffic and manage speed on a highway, yet they still expect a human to watch the road and take over instantly. When that expectation is blurred by marketing language, attention drifts, and reaction time shrinks.

For Saudi buyers, the question is increasingly practical rather than theoretical. Driver-assistance features that were once limited to luxury models have spread into mainstream sedans and mid-size SUVs from Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, Kia, Tesla and a growing list of Chinese brands. On long, monotonous routes such as Riyadh to Dammam or Jeddah to Makkah, these systems can genuinely reduce fatigue — but they are also exactly the conditions where drivers are most tempted to stop paying attention.

Shoppers comparing rivals in this space should look past the badge and study the details. Does the car monitor the driver's eyes or hands, and does it escalate warnings or simply switch off? Is the feature standard or bundled into an expensive trim? How does the system cope with faded lane markings, roadworks, glare, dust and extreme heat
