Porsche Never Sold A Mid-Engined 911, So This Italian Shop Is Trying To Make One

Italian shop Angelelli Automobili aims to build a mid-engined 911, a layout Porsche never offered for the model. The project seeks to create a driver-focused variant with improved weight distribution.

An Italian restoration and tuning specialist, Angelelli Automobili, has announced a project that challenges Porsche’s own history: building a mid-engined 911. While Porsche has produced countless variations of its iconic rear-engine sports car, the only mid-engined 911 ever built was the GT1 race car from the late 1990s, a homologation special never offered to regular buyers. Now this independent workshop aims to create a road-legal version of that layout for the first time.

For Saudi Arabian enthusiasts, this project would sit in a very exclusive niche. The Porsche 911 traditionally competes with front-engine grand tourers like the Aston Martin Vantage and rear- or all-wheel-drive sports cars such as the Chevrolet Corvette. A mid-engined 911 would instead rival models like the Lamborghini Huracán, Ferrari F8 Tributo, or McLaren GT—cars that already place the engine behind the driver for sharper handling. That shift in dynamics could attract buyers seeking a more track-focused feel without leaving the Porsche family.

What should Saudi shoppers keep in mind? First, this is a bespoke conversion, not a factory product. That means costs will likely be high, and availability limited. Buyers would need to consider whether local service centers can maintain a heavily modified vehicle, and whether the conversion preserves the 911’s legendary reliability. Also, the car’s insurance and resale value would be uncertain, as it will not carry Porsche’s official warranty.

Angelelli Automobili has not revealed a timeline or price, but the project shows how demand for unique interpretations of classic layouts persists. For now, the mid-engined 911 remains a tantalizing what-if—one that only a small Italian workshop dares to turn into reality.
