PGE gets it: electric semi trucks provide HEAVY DUTY backup for the grid [video]

Oregon utility Portland General Electric (“PGE”) is highlighting the environmental, health, and grid benefits to electrifying medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks, calling the battery-backed big rigs “batteries on wheels.” more…

Portland General Electric is putting a spotlight on the electrification of medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks, arguing that battery-packed rigs deliver benefits that reach well beyond the vehicle itself. The Oregon utility describes these trucks as "batteries on wheels," a nod to the fact that a large electric truck carries an energy storage pack far bigger than anything found in a passenger car — capacity that can be put to work when the vehicle is parked.

That framing matters because it shifts the conversation from fuel savings alone to what a fleet can offer the wider power system. A truck sitting idle overnight or between shifts is, in effect, a stationary battery that can absorb cheap or surplus electricity and, with the right charging equipment, send power back when demand peaks. PGE also points to cleaner air and lower running costs as reasons to move commercial fleets away from diesel.

For Saudi readers, the idea is still largely forward-looking. Electric heavy trucks are only beginning to appear in the Kingdom, and the segment sits at the premium, early-adopter end of the commercial market rather than the volume end. Fleet operators weighing one against a conventional diesel tractor are effectively comparing a higher purchase outlay with lower running costs, quieter operation and the ability to charge at a depot.

The likely alternatives shoppers will encounter are the European electric heavy haulers from Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Renault Trucks, alongside Chinese manufacturers that have been pushing aggressively into commercial electric vehicles. Range, payload penalty from the battery pack and the pace of local charging build-out will decide which of these suits Saudi routes.

Buyers should look closely at battery thermal management, since Gulf summer heat is hard on packs and can affect charging speed and long-term capacity. Warranty coverage on the battery, the availability of spare parts and trained service technicians, and the resale picture after several years of heavy use all deserve scrutiny before committing a fleet.
