Chery’s newest brand says it has no rivals in Australia

New Chinese brand Lepas says it's filling a "huge white space" in the Australian market, but won't sell in the same volumes as sister brand Chery.

Chery's newest sub-brand, Lepas, has entered the Australian market with an unusual pitch: it claims it has no real rivals there. According to the company, it is targeting a gap in that market that other carmakers have overlooked, rather than going head-to-head with the established players. At the same time, Lepas has made clear it is not chasing the same sales volumes as its better-known sister brand, Chery.

That combination — a niche claim with modest volume ambitions — says a lot about how Lepas wants to be positioned. Chery already runs several brands across different price points and characters, so Lepas is being presented as something more distinctive than simply a cheaper or restyled Chery.
