BYD Says ‘Hacker’ Tapped Into Shark 6 Wiring As Aussie Documentary Slammed As Hit Piece

The Chinese car manufacturer has quickly addressed documentary claims about security vulnerabilities with the popular Shark 6

BYD has moved quickly to push back against an Australian documentary that raised concerns about security weaknesses in its Shark 6 pickup, with the company indicating that the incident at the centre of the claims involved someone physically tapping into the vehicle’s wiring rather than breaking in remotely. That distinction matters, because it reframes the story from a software or wireless flaw into a question of what happens when a person already has hands-on access to a truck.

The Chinese automaker has also dismissed the film’s framing as a hit piece, arguing the allegations were presented in a way that overstated the risk to ordinary owners. The back-and-forth reflects how closely the Shark 6 is being watched, both in Australia, where it has shaken up the pickup market, and in markets like Saudi Arabia, where Chinese brands are gaining ground fast.

For Saudi shoppers, the Shark 6 sits in a familiar but crowded segment. It competes with established workhorses such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max, plus newer Chinese entries. Its hook is a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which promises lower fuel costs around town and strong low-end response, though it also means buyers should think about charging access and how the system behaves in extreme summer heat.

On the security question, shoppers should separate physical tampering from remote threats. Almost any modern vehicle can be compromised if someone has the time and tools to reach its harnesses. What matters more is whether the brand issues prompt software updates, how transparent it is about fixes, and whether local dealers are equipped to handle electrical faults.

Before committing, Beseyat Cars advises a thorough test drive in Saudi conditions, questions about warranty coverage on hybrid components, and a check on parts availability and service network reach. It is also worth waiting for independent verification before treating any single documentary claim as settled.
