The shortlist for North America's 2027 Car, Truck and Utility of the Year awards is out, and the truck category has produced an awkward matchup: a pickup that shoppers cannot yet order is going head-to-head with a six-figure halo truck whose price tag sits around the $103,000 mark. The car field, meanwhile, contains no American brands at all — a striking reflection of how thoroughly the traditional domestic sedan and hatchback line-up has been pared back.

For Saudi buyers, the truck contest is the one worth following. It pits a limited-run performance machine — the sort of high-output, big-bodied pickup that has become a status purchase in Riyadh and Jeddah — against a model that has not yet reached showrooms. Award juries often reward engineering ambition as much as showroom volume, so an unreleased contender making the cut says something about how the industry is positioning its next generation of trucks.
