GPA Calculator - Cumulative GPA
What is the cumulative GPA calculator?
Grades are standardized measurements of academic performance. They can be letters (A, B, C, D, F), numbers, or percentages. The cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) summarizes your performance across all completed semesters, and it is used by universities and employers to compare and evaluate students. This free calculator computes your semester GPA and cumulative GPA accurately on both the 4.0 and 5.0 grading scales.

Grade points table
Cumulative GPA is calculated by converting each course grade to points, then multiplying the points by the course credit hours. The table below shows the grades, percentage ranges, and equivalent points on the 5.0 and 4.0 scales, exactly as used by the calculator:
| Grade | Percentage | Points (5.0 scale) | Points (4.0 scale) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 95 - 100 | 5.00 | 4.00 |
| A | 90 - 94 | 4.75 | 3.75 |
| B+ | 85 - 89 | 4.50 | 3.50 |
| B | 80 - 84 | 4.00 | 3.00 |
| C+ | 75 - 79 | 3.50 | 2.50 |
| C | 70 - 74 | 3.00 | 2.00 |
| D+ | 65 - 69 | 2.50 | 1.50 |
| D | 60 - 64 | 2.00 | 1.00 |
| F | Below 60 | 1.00 | 0.00 |
GPA classification (overall rating)
After calculating your cumulative GPA, your overall rating is classified as follows:
| Rating | GPA (5.0 scale) | GPA (4.0 scale) |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 4.50 to 5.00 | 3.50 to 4.00 |
| Very Good | 3.75 to below 4.50 | 2.75 to below 3.50 |
| Good | 2.75 to below 3.75 | 1.75 to below 2.75 |
| Pass | 2.00 to below 2.75 | 1.00 to below 1.75 |
Worked example
A student completed 30 credit hours with a previous cumulative GPA of 4.20 (5.0 scale), and registered three courses this semester:
- A 3-hour course with an A+ (5.00 × 3 = 15 points)
- A 2-hour course with a B+ (4.50 × 2 = 9 points)
- A 3-hour course with a C (3.00 × 3 = 9 points)
Semester points = 33 over 8 hours, so the semester GPA = 33 ÷ 8 = 4.13. The new cumulative GPA = previous points (30 × 4.20 = 126) + semester points (33) = 159 points ÷ total hours (38) = 4.18, which corresponds to a "Very Good" rating. Enter the same numbers in the calculator above to verify the result yourself.
